Invisalign, the “clear alternative to braces,” has been available since the 1990s. However, it has only recently taken the world by storm. If you are thinking about Invisalign, you likely have some questions about what to expect. Here are the top 10 questions and answers about Invisalign.
1. How does Invisalign work?
First, we will create a 3-D digital model of your current smile. Then, we will morph it to show you what you can expect from each stage of treatment. When we are all satisfied, we will use specialized software to create a series of customized, clear, medical grade aligners. You will wear each set of aligners 20 to 22 hours per day for two weeks, or as instructed, and then change aligners at home.
2. What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Since Invisalign’s clear aligners are virtually invisible, no one has to know that you are straightening your teeth. They are removable, so you can eat, drink, and brush your teeth like normal. We need to see you just once every four to six weeks to check on your progress, and there are no metal brackets or wires to scratch or poke your tongue and cheeks.
3. Is Invisalign always the right choice?
In most cases, deciding between braces and Invisalign is up to you. Considering the benefits of Invisalign over braces, we believe Invisalign is a great choice. Read about the benefits of Invisalign over braces.
4. I had braces, but then my teeth shifted again. Can Invisalign help?
If you had braces as a teen, you might be frustrated to discover that your teeth have slowly shifted in the time since then. Invisalign can be an excellent solution for those who do not want to go through the annoyances of braces again.
5. I have dental veneers. Will Invisalign work for me?
The answer is “it depends.” We will take a detailed look at your full mouth, including the positioning of your veneers and which teeth need straightening, to determine whether Invisalign will work for you.
6. Can I use Invisalign with a dental bridge?
Unfortunately, we cannot place Invisalign for patients with an existing dental bridge. Invisalign moves each tooth separately, while dental bridges connect the teeth to each other. We will help you decide on a solution that works with your existing restoration.
7. Can I eat, drink, smoke, and chew gum with Invisalign?
Since the aligners are removable, you can simply pop them out to eat your favorite foods. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are fine with your aligners in, as are small amounts of foods that are not sticky or hard. Just be sure to clean your aligners and brush your teeth as soon as you can.
Always take out your aligners before eating a full meal, consuming anything hard or sticky, or chewing gum. Smoking will not damage your aligners, but it could cause discoloration.
8. How Much Does Invisalign Cost?
Invisalign costs vary due to factors ranging from your geographic area to the current condition of your smile. It generally costs around the same amount as braces, though, especially when you consider that all adjustments and emergency visits, as well as upgrades, must be added to the base price of braces.
9. Is Invisalign covered by dental insurance?
Again, it depends. Some dental insurance plans cover both braces and Invisalign, some cover one or the other, and some provide no orthodontic benefits at all. You also likely have an annual cap on the amount your insurance company will pay. Our office staff will help you understand your coverage and your out of pocket costs when you come in for a visit.
10. How can I pay for Invisalign?
We accept most major credit cards as well as CareCredit. This instant-approval healthcare financing offers several different payment options including zero-interest promotions. We also have an in-office payment plan for Invisalign as well as outside financing with monthly payments as low as $195. Our office staff will help you select the financing option that is right for you.
